to enrol as a member of the oldest active chess club in
Port Elizabeth. The club consists of social and serious members.
The club is passionate about chess and takes pride in the promotion and
development of chess. In the past the club had many young chess players
whom exceled in their games and represented our Union at various levels,
Provincial and SA.
By enrolling as a member you will gain valuable experience as a player by
playing against top rated players in our Union whom are club members.
The club will again this year host fixed opening, rated-, rapid and blitz
tournaments. There will also be Pitch and Play evenings.

This year we appointed a permanent Tournament Director (TD).
The latter’s duty will be to stay until the last game has finished.
General Rules
Starting Times:-
- WARRIORS : Thursdays @ 18:45 till 22:00
A player may only participate in a tournament if his/her membership fees or the entrance fee for the tournament is paid in full.
All games will start promptly at 19:00 for the WARRIORS.
The tournament director reserves the right to shorten the time control for the first round of a tournament, due to registration delays.
All players are to supply their own chess clocks. The player with the black pieces to supply a clock.
The pairings will be calculated on Wednesday by 18:00 prior to the round being played. It is the player's responsibility to contact the club if he/she cannot play a round. A player must do so before the pairings are calculated (see above). If a player fails to do so he/she will forfeit the game.
The arbiter may re-pair the players without opponents so that they have an opponent for that round.
Only players on the top 5 boards may claim the point if his opponent fails to arrive.
The draw for the top 5 boards will thus not be reshuffled.
The club reserves the right to withhold entry into the A and B sections of the Club Championship from players who are in disrepute.
Tie breaks used to determine tournament winners is, first Direct encounter and then Cumul followed by Bucholtz.
Tournament Director will stay till the last game finished.
Membership Fees
All membership fees are payable on enrolment.
The Annual Club Fees for the 2013 chess year: -
Adult & Student Member : R 200 p.a.
Senior Member (over 60yrs) : R 150 p.a.
Scholar (Junior & High School) Member : R 150 p.a.
FAMILY DISCOUNT: Households with more than 2 players will only pay for the two most
expensive members; thereafter the rest of the household play for free. This only applies to
households.
There are 5 Blitz tournaments throughout the year. These tournaments are open to all players (not only club members) and have their own entry fee (R10 per event) with prizes for each tournament in the category 1st, best high school, best primary school player and best beginner. At the end of the year we then also crown a Blitz Champion based on all the events. Format: 5 min per player to finish the game. 5-7 rounds per night depending on the number of entrants.

This tournament consists of 5 rounds and is played every Thursday evening. The first round starting on 7 February 2013 and the last round will end on 7 March 2013.
The Fixed Opening for 2013 is: Catalan Opening.
In the Fixed Opening tournament every game must start from a chosen position. The format is:
- Each round will consists of 2 games per night.
- In each round you play two games against the same opponent.
- One game with the white pieces and one with the black pieces.t

The Bergman Cup is a fun tournament. Format: 30 min per player to finish the game. 2 rounds per night.
The Springbok Cup is a serious, CHESSA rated tournament. Format: one section only. Players will have 60 min per player with 30 seconds increment from move 1. One round per night.
The Supplements SA tournament is a fun tournament where a new opening is chosen each round to start playing from. Format: 25 min per player to finish the game. Two rounds per night. This event is sponsored by Ewan Kromhout the Director of Supplements SA.
An example would be that a team should consist of an a player with rating 1700+,
a high school player, 2 primary school players and a girl. High school players
with a rating of more than 1700 will fall in the 1700+ category and not the High
school category.
We believe that this event will add an extra dimension to the PECC. All club
members are encouraged to participate.
The time control will be 30/30 with teams to play 2 rounds per night.
The Club Championships is the premier event on the calendar. It is a serious,
CHESSA rated tournament. Format: A-section consists of 8 invited players who
play a round-robin tournament with 90 min + 30 sec/move per player to finish the
game. B-section consist if the next group of 8 invited players and is the same
format as the A section. The remainder of the players will compete in a C
section where players will have 60 minutes per player to finish the game. One
round
per night.
This is a national event where clubs from all over SA enter teams to participate in a club team championship. Teams consist of 4 players with the option of a reserve. Clubs may enter more than 1 team and it will be our aim to enter 3 teams for this event. Please plan your diary accordingly.

Senior players (over 18 years) pay R150 per term for 2011 which equates to R600 per annum and R100 per term for juniors. This will allow PECC to in more funds and will enable us to deal with late joiners with ease, without having to make all sorts of calculations.
Should a player wish to pay for the year in advance he will receive a rebate of R100.00.

All fees have to be paid by the second round attended in a specific quarter. Should a member not wish to participate in a specific term he merely pays for the term he chooses.
